THIMUN & SPIMUN

SPIMUN is one of the United Nations Models affiliated to the Hague International Model United Nations which was founded in 1968, attracts around 3500 students of High Schools from more than 180 schools from more than 180 schools from over 90 different countries of the world.

THIMUN provides an educational programme for High School students worldwide. At present THIMUN has 14 affiliated Model United Nations conferences which are held on four continients, eight countries in the cities of:The Hague, Berlin, Dublin, Pekin, Caracas, Nairobi, Ivanovo and others.

The objective of the conference is to seek, through discussion, negotiation and debate, solutions to the various problems of the world. Thus THIMUN aims to educate the coming generation in the spirit of tolerance, mutual respect and cooperation. The non-native speakers of English get an excellent chance to expand their language skills through participation in THIMUN.

SPIMUN was held for the first time in March 1997,from Wednesday 19 to Friday 21. The conference was held mainly in the impressive 19th century building of School 157, a school founded in 1868 by Princess Oldenburgskaya and now an English-speaking Experimental High School of the Russian Academy of Education.

The opening ceremony took place on March 20 at 9.30 in the famous Taurida Palace, now the home to the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS(Commonwealth of the Independant States)and formerly the seat of the pre-revolutionary Russian parliament, the Duma.

The conference was a three-days simulation of the Economic and Social Council and three commissions which will consider the questions taken from the real ECOSOC agenda. The Questions were discussed by country delegations of students from school 157 St.Petersburg, Ivanovo, American International School Zurich, Geneva College, german School in Athens and the delegation from Netherlands.Due to the general principles of the UN Models the delegates represented member states different from countries of their origin to overcome national views of the world problems.

SPIMUN is aimed to bring together in the city-the birthplace of Russian parliamentarism and the largest centre of Russian and European culture-students from Russia and foreign countries and give them a chance to share in English their opinions on various problems of the World Community with special attention to social, economic, humanitarian, cultural and environmental problems.
